The 184th Intelligence Wing of the Kansas Air National Guard at McConnell AFB in Wichita has signed-on with the 190th Air Refueling Wing stationed at Forbes Field in Topeka for hands on medical training at The University of Kansas Health System. The training affiliation agreement is unique in the nation as the only civilian medical training at an academic teaching and research hospital.  Penny Glenn is both a registered nurse at The University of Kansas Hospital and a Major in the guard.

“It’s an honor to serve both when training fellow medics,” Glenn said.  “I’ve nothing but positive feedback on the program.”

Colonel Bill Hefner, commander of the 190th Medical Group, praised the program which he helped begin many years ago.  “The training instills confidence and confirms the passion our medics have for the work they do while meeting a skills gap not available through a slide presentation.”

The Chief Medical Officer at The University of Kansas Health System and Lt. Colonel in the Army National Guard echoed the praise of the training program.  “It’s the right thing to do,” Lee Norman, MD said. “We take pride in supporting the mission of our National Guard troops whether serving at home in their communities during times of disaster or supporting the military overseas.”

Efforts are underway to further expand the training with the Air Guard in St. Joseph, MO and the combat medics with the Kansas Army National Guard.
