This year, the Burnett Burn Center of The University of Kansas Health System expects to see more than 40 people with injuries from 4th of July fireworks.  The burn center is the only accredited burn center in the region for both adult and pediatric burns.

Last year The University of Kansas Health System was there for 2-year-old Damian Farnsworth of St. Joseph, Missouri.  An errant bottle rocket caused second and third degree burns on Damian’s chest, neck and arm.  He was rushed to the Burnett Burn Center where he wound up staying for 11 days.  The damage from the burn will require treatment for most of his life.

In the video, his mother, Christina Farnsworth tells Damien’s story with pictures of Damien during his treatment.  Burn Unit nurse Ashton Bergh (Berg) offers advice for avoiding injuries from fireworks and what to do if you are injured.
