The newly identified avian influenza called H5N2 has reached the Central flyway zone with confirmed cases in Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Minnesota, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. Avian Influenza is a contagious, rapidly spreading viral disease affecting birds. Outbreaks of this strain of avian influenza are not considered to be a threat to public health or the food supply. Still, The University of Kansas Hospital Chief Medical Officer Lee Norman (MD) has alerted hospital medical staff and explains why along with precautions for others.
