The University of Kansas Hospital admitted eight patients with injuries related to fireworks over the weekend.
Mortars and sparklers were the primary cause of injuries over the holiday weekend that started last Friday.
The hospital admitted six people over the Independence Day holiday in 2014.
In all, there were 21 patients with fireworks injuries treated at the hospital this year compared 34 during the same time last year. However, there were more traumatic amputations and more admissions this year.
The patients treated were between the ages of four and 67, with the average age of 32. 17 males and 4 females were treated.
Medical staff expect to see more injuries this week as people use up their supply of fireworks.

Trauma Services’ registered nurse Jennifer Parks explains.
