If you’re sending your child to summer camp, chances are bug spray is on the packing list. But with all of the worry about the Zika virus and mosquitos, many parents are wondering what kind to get.

Dr. Dana Hawkinson is an infectious disease specialist at The University of Kansas Hospital. In the video he explains what’s important in choosing the right insect repellent. He also discusses DEET, why it works against mosquitos, and alternatives that work. And he talks about when mosquitoes are the most active, and what other pests, like ticks, we should be concerned about, including the diseases they can bring. And he explains why, if you’re using sunscreen and insect repellent together, it’s important to apply them in the right order.
