For baseball fans, there are no sweeter words than “Pitchers and catchers report.” It signals the beginning of spring training for every major league team, including the Kansas City Royals. Their pitchers and catchers report to the team’s spring training complex in Surprise, Arizona on Tuesday, February 12, and the full squad checks in on Monday, February 18.
Dr. Vince Key is head team physician of the Royals and an orthopedic surgeon with the Sports Medicine and Performance Center at The University of Kansas Health System. In the video, he talks about how he’ll join the team at spring training…and will bring all the resources of the health system to the camp. He says for him, there is no off season, as he’s seen a number of players over the winter months, and has conducted player physicals in the Dominican Republic. He says there are many more players than just the major league squad at spring training…and he and his team will conduct about 200 physicals for players at every level of the Royals system. He also says recent player additions have made the Royals a faster team this year. As a former college track star, Dr. Key says he’ll be in a unique position to advise the players on proper running techniques and how to avoid injuries.
