Spring training is in full swing for the world champion Kansas City Royals, as well as many youth baseball teams in the area. But even though the players are excited to be back on the field, they don’t just rush right in and start running, throwing and swinging.
Dr. Vince Key is the team doctor for the Royals, and an orthopedic surgeon with The Sports Medicine and Performance Center at The University of Kansas Hospital. We caught up with him at the Royals spring training camp in Surprise, Arizona where he’s on a mission to keep the players from injuries. In the video, Dr. Key explains how and why it’s so important to properly warm up, how long a warm up should last, what “joint mobilization” is and why it’s so important and the best techniques for getting the most out of jogging and pre-workout running. The video also includes b-roll of the Royals going through their stretching and warm up routines.
