This month, the world marks the 35th anniversary of the first published reports of what we now know as HIV/AIDS. According to the National Institutes of Health, this disease has wrought enormous suffering and devastation and caused more than 35 million deaths. But there is cause for hope, thanks to remarkable advances in research and medicines, which could bring us closer the end of the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
Dr. Dana Hawkinson, an infectious disease specialist at The University of Kansas Hospital, sees HIV and AIDS patients. In the video, he explains the difference between the two, how it’s transmitted, who’s at risk, what the treatments are and how effective they are, and why there is not cure yet. He also debunks some of the myths surrounding HIV and AIDS.
