When the federal government closed Walter Reed Army Medical in Washington, D.C. several years ago, it left many National Guard units without a place to send their medical teams for hands-on training. But a partnership between The University of Kansas Hospital and the Kansas Air National Guard now allows those units to come to a facility closer to home for this vital training.
Major Carlton Abner of the Kansas Air National Guard demonstrates some of the training using a hi-tech simulator in a hospital setting. He also talks about why the Guard’s medical staff needs to train, how the sophisticated simulators work and the different types of experiences, from ambulance ride-a-longs to working in the burn unit and emergency department, to working with helicopters for medical evacuations, can help the trainees.
