It’s not every 9 year old who gets a police escort as he’s leaving the hospital. But Alex Dewey is no ordinary 9 year old. He was injured when his go-cart caught fire, setting his clothes on fire, and burning Alex over 60 to 70 percent of his body.
After a three month stay in the Burn Unit at The University of Kansas Hospital, during which he received two thousand get-well cards from around the country, Alex was able to leave for home, accompanied by a group of police cars and fire trucks, with lights and sirens blaring in his honor.
His grandmother, Cynthia Matteson, says it’s one of the happiest days of his life, and Alex hopes to return to school by November. His doctor, Richard Korentager, MD, says Alex still has a long recovery ahead.
