Cold Weather Baseball Tips From the Royals Team Doctor

Spring is here, and with it comes the start of baseball season…for both the Royals and for area youth sports teams. But playing baseball in the unusually cool weather we’ve had lately has special challenges.

In the video, Dr. Vince Key, head team physician for the Kansas City Royals and an orthopedic surgeon at The University of Kansas Health System, has some advice for the younger athletes…the same advices he gives the big-leaguers. He says it’s important to keep up the off-season stretching and conditioning…even once practices have started. He says that’s vital for endurance and making sure the athlete doesn’t run out of energy during the season. He also has advice for pitchers, and how the cold weather affects their preparation…and says there’s even a heated sleeve that pitchers can put on their arm between innings. And he says for all players, take advantage of any off day to rest…it will pay off at the end of the season.
