As the Metro area braces for another round of snow and temperatures in the deep freeze, Emergency Department staff at The University of Kansas Health System are also preparing. So far, 11 patients have sought treatment for cold related problems since the first storm on Tuesday, inclujding patient admitted today for frostbite. We will provide the latest numbers from our Emergency Department tomorrow morning on the Morning Medical Update at 8 a.m. The program will focus on dealing with the effects of single digit temperatures, and for those braving the Chiefs game Saturday night, how to safely cope with being outdoors in close to zero-degree temperatures. To watch and ask questions of our medical team in the morning, please see the red headline below for login information.
Speaking of cold temperatures, have you ever wondered what it takes to heat an entire hospital with multiple buildings and clinics? It’s like trying to heat a small city. And if you thought your heating bill is high in the winter, how does $250,000 a month sound? The video above contains an interview with Nick Burke, director of Engineering and Energy at The University of Kansas Health System who talks about the challenges of keeping the heat coming in the cold weather. It also contains b-roll from inside the Central Heating System Facility.
