Coronavirus Media Briefing Friday 3-27-20

Doctors at the health system told reporters two more COVID-19 patients were admitted to the hospital yesterday and overnight bringing the total to 18.  Ten of those 18 patients are in the intensive care unit and six are on ventilators.  The other patients are on a unit dedicated to COVID-19  and away from other patients.

Doctors to continue to talk with other health care professionals within the region and as far away as Wuhon, China, to share best practices for COVID-19 patients.

  • Steve Stites, MD, Chief Medical Officer at the health system said, “Wuhan medical professionals who used the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) did not catch the virus.  This is important as we are now on the ascending side of the curve.”
  • Keith Sale, MD, Physician VP Ambulatory Services told reporters how telehealth is helping to conserve PPE in the hospital as doctors can communicate with patients outside of their patient room.  It is also providing a way for patients with other health concerns to receive treatment while remaining at home and staying safe.
  • Dana Hawkinson, MD, Medical Director Infection Prevention and Control infectious diseases says proper hand hygiene and keeping your hands away from your face continue to be the most effective way to stop the spread of the disease.

Monday,  March 30, at 8:00 a.m. is the next daily briefing call with media.  The feed is now available via TVU grid.  The TVU source is UoK_Health and is being made available to all.  You will still need to call-in to ask questions.
