Doctors at The University of Kansas Hospital Sports Medicine and Performance Center say the movie “Concussion” provides an opening to talk about preventing, diagnosing and treating concussions.
“Concussion” opens Christmas Day and deals with the issue of head injuries in football. The hospital is the sports medicine provider to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Kansas City Royals, Kansas Speedway and Sprint Arena, along with a number of area high schools.
Michael Moncure, MD, who heads the hospital’s Concussion Management program, says there has been significant progress in reducing concussions in football.
David Smith, MD, has 25 years in every level of sports medicine, from high school and college to professional and Olympic athletes. Dr. Smith says there has been a massive increase in knowledge about concussions in just the last couple of years.
