Dr. Key's Summer Advice for High School Baseball Players

A lot of high school baseball players are wrapping up the season right now, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to relax. In the video, Dr. Vince Key, head team physician for the Kansas City Royals, and orthopedic surgeon at The Sports Medicine and Performance Center with The University of Kansas Health System says it’s important for them to step up their shoulder and elbow maintenance program for the summer. He says stretching should happen every day as well as the strengthening program. Dr. Key says the most common problem is that young players stop their workout routine for the summer when the spring season ends, then try to start up just before fall ball. This last minute exercise startup causes them to hurt and they can’t do fall ball. He also says rest between activities is vital…because the more you fatigue, the more you risk injury.
