FDA Bans Trans-Fatty Acids From Food Supply

The Food and Drug Administration has announced it’s beginning the process of removing artificial trans-fat from the nation’s food supply. The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention estimates more than 5,000 people a year die from heart disease related to artificial trans-fat in the food supply, and three times that number will get heart disease as a result.

Julie-Ann Dutton is a registered dietitian with the Lipid Clinic at The University of Kansas Hospital. In the video below, she talks about what the FDA did, the possible health problems with trans-fatty acids, why some fat in our diet is still needed, what is the right kind of fat, and why we must still be aware of total calories in our diet.
