Hip Pain? You're Not Alone

Hip pain has become one of the most common complaints people bring to their doctor. It’s one of the top reasons patients see Dr. Scott Mullen, a sports medicine-trained orthopedic surgeon with the Sports Medicine and Performance Center at The University of Kansas Hospital.

Dr. Mullen says it’s only in the last 5-10 years that doctors have started identifying a common cause of hip pain…tears in the labrum in the hip. The labrum is a rim of cartilage that surrounds the hip joint. The vast majority of labral tears are from FemoroAcetabular Impingement (FAI), a condition that develops in a person’s early teen years.

In the video, Dr. Mullen explains FAI and labral tears, describes the symptoms, explains how common it is, how it’s treated and whether this condition can lead to arthritis.
