Keeping Coronavirus in Perspective

Don’t panic. Stay calm. That’s the advice doctors are giving to the public with all the news about the coronoavirus in the last few weeks. Even though 80,000 people around the world have been infected with the virus, with 53 confirmed cases here in the U.S., doctors say the flu is by far a much bigger public health concern. So far this season, 29-million flu cases have been reported in the U.S. with 16,000 deaths and 280-thousand in the hospital. The CDC web site is best source of information that’s updated daily.

In the video, Dr. Dana Hawkinson, infectious disease physician with The University of Kansas Health System says the best way to prevent the spread of coronavirus is to be vigilant and to wash your hands often with soap and water or alcohol-based hand cleaners and avoid touching your mouth or eyes…that’s how viruses spread. He says there’s no need to run out and get a mask for your or your family. He says there are already measures in place to provide care and support to those who may be infected. If you’re planning to travel, Dr. Hawkinson says it’s important to monitor daily travel advisories from the CDC. He talks about how to know if you have the virus, and how to know if you should be in the hospital. He also discusses whether you can spread the virus before showing any symptoms.
