Kids In Cars Heat Safety

Doctors at the health system remind us with extreme temperatures coming in the next few days, children are especially vulnerable to the heat. Dr. Sean Sood is a pediatric critical care specialist at The University of Kansas Health System, and in the video, reminds us of the challenges of keeping kids safe in the heat, especially in cars. He says vigilance is vital, more so if they are in a rear-facing car seat where it’s easy for adults to forget they are there. He explained 90 percent of hot car deaths involve children three years and younger. "There have been children that have suffered a heat stroke even if the temperature is 60 or 70 degrees," said Dr. Sood. "The rate of rise for temperature for a child can be up to five times higher than an adult. Organs begin shutting down at 104 degrees, and by 107, organ death occurs.”
