KU Hospital's Miracle on 39th Street

It was one year ago on December 18, when Allen Young lost his wife of 24 years to cancer.  Allen and Laura were perhaps best known for cheering up children at Christmas time as Santa and Mrs. Claus.  Before she passed, Laura told Allen she wanted him to continue to play Santa every year and think of her.  But in January doctors were telling Allen they might have to amputate his leg.  Allen had neglected a growing infection in his knee while he cared for Laura in her final days and then carried out her final wish.  Allen told The University of Kansas Hospital Orthopedic Surgeon David Anderson that Santa couldn’t have just one leg.  Four surgeries and ten months later, Dr. Anderson saved Santa’s leg and gave him a new knee.  Santa made the pediatric unit at The University of Kansas Hospital his first stop.
