Key points from today’s guests:
Susan Warren, type 2 diabetes patient
- Has been diabetic for about 20 years and been on a number of different medications.
- Thanks Pattie Lueyot for getting her to the Cray Diabetes Center. The counseling, the visits with the support groups, and programs are very helpful.
- Now sleeping through the night because blood sugars are remaining normal, which is excellent.
- Has more energy and it's just been life altering and life changing for her.
- Planning is very important – use grocery lists. Keep your focus on you and make sure when you're preparing food for other people, that you also have alternatives for yourself.
Pattie Lueyot, RD, registered dietician, nutritionist and certified diabetes educator, The University of Kansas Health System
- The Cray Diabetes Center focuses on diabetes treatment based on a mutual conversation, listening, and problem solving between the provider, the doctor and the patient.
- Recently, we are seeing more people, younger people, living with pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes.
- Unfortunately, 80 percent of them don't know that they have diabetes. Most people can live with high blood sugar or pre-diabetes and type two diabetes up to 10 years before they find out that they have diabetes.
- Recommend people test for it by asking their doctor at the annual physical exam to do a 1C test.
- Eating healthy doesn't mean that you have to always eat less or stop eating the food that you like.
- It's all about balancing it, especially during Thanksgiving. Enjoy the Thanksgiving meal, but be very mindful about the carbohydrates and portion control. Take a walk after the meal too.
Dr. Dana Hawkinson, medical director of Infection Prevention and Control, The University of Kansas Health System
- So many people are affected by diabetes. It is a truly an epidemic as well.
- Try continuing to have that healthy lifestyle -- get out and exercise when you can and also practice healthy eating habits -- which we know is difficult around the holidays.
- The Cray Diabetes Center website will help with that.
