The University of Kansas Health System is treating a total of 15 COVID patients today, up from 13 Friday. Other significant numbers:
- 8 with the active virus today, 6 Friday
- 1 in ICU, 0 Friday
- 0 on ventilator, 0 Friday
- 7 hospitalized but out of acute infection phase, 7 Friday
Key points from today’s guests:
Dr. Ajay Nangia, urologist, The University of Kansas Health System
- Getting men to take care of themselves is going to require a culture change. They are more likely to take care of their car than they are themselves.
- Most men are conditioned to avoid medical care until a serious problem develops
- Three big screenings men need to get are for colon cancer, prostate cancer and HPV
- Kansas governor has declared this Men’s Health Month in Kansas
- Men need a goal and a reason to live other than themselves, such as their family. Then they might listen and take care of themselves with that in mind
- His biggest message for men is to take care of yourself. It’s up to you, it’s not up to anybody else.
Dr. Dana Hawkinson, medical director of Infection Prevention and Control, The University of Kansas Health System
- National seven-day average of cases is much lower than in the winter with delta and omicron
- News that COIVD testing for international air travelers is ending is probably a good idea as the practice has outlived its usefulness
- We’re going to continue to see hotspots such as San Juan, Miami and Honolulu
- Studies are underway to look at long-COVID in children
- We will most likely have to learn to live with COVID, as it’s not going away soon, and the risk of death is still higher than from influenza. But we do have good vaccines and treatments.
Wednesday, June 15 at 8:00 a.m. is the next Open Mics With Dr. Stites. Healthcare is not equal for all. Twice as many Black men die of heart disease. Black women are more prone to late stage, aggressive cancers while Black girls are often assessed differently when it comes to mental health. Dr. Steve Stites looks at these important health disparities.
