Morning Medical Update Tuesday 3-29-22

The University of Kansas Health System is treating a total of 67 COVID patients today, up from 63 yesterday. Other significant numbers:

  • 14 with the active virus today, 14 yesterday
  • 1 in ICU, 2 yesterday
  • 1 on ventilator, 1 yesterday
  • 53 hospitalized but out of acute infection phase, 49 yesterday

Key points from today’s guests:

Dr. Steve Stites, chief medical officer, The University of Kansas Health System

  • Even with only 14 active COVID infections, we should not get a false sense of security. There is still community transmission going on.
  • The BA 2 variant is on the rise and is probably 40 to 50% of all recorded infections
  • Based on wastewater testing, hope is that we will not be hit by the variant the same as Europe
  • Fourth vaccination for those 50 and older will be authorized soon

Dr. Dana Hawkinson, medical director of Infection Prevention and Control

  • When you have vaccination and infection or repeated infection you have good T-cell immunity.
  • That is what is going to save you from coming to the hospital, going to the ICU, and dying
  • We are being optimistic in believing that here in the United States, and specifically in our community, we won’t be hit as hard with a new surge of BA 2

Dr. Bruce Toby, orthopedic surgeon and retired chair of Orthopedics

  • Has run in the Boston Marathon and has qualified to run again this year
  • Training for the race takes a long time and helps keep you fit
  • Never too late to take up running, or even walking. The key is start slow and work your way up
  • Listen to your body. If it tells you don’t run today, then don’t.

Dr. Nicole Yedlinsky, Family Medicine and Sports Medicine Physician

  • Runs not only in marathons, but ultramarathons, which can be up to 100 miles
  • Endorses 3D training aid at the Sports Medicine and Performance Center that can help you run more efficiently.
  • Don’t need the most expensive running shoes, just ones that fit the best
  • Has seen a big uptick in patients taking up walking and running during COVID. Allows them to be outdoors and not have to worry as much about COVID transmission.
