Morning Medical Update Tuesday 5-31-22

The University of Kansas Health System is treating a total of 18 COVID patients today, down from 19 Friday. Other significant numbers:

  • 11 with the active virus today, 9 Friday
  • 1 in ICU, 2 Friday
  • 0 on ventilator, 0 Friday
  • 7 hospitalized but out of acute infection phase, 10 Friday

Key points from today’s guests:

Dr. Neala Boyer, K-State veterinarian

  • Recent study in scientific journal PLOS shows letting your dog eat from a dirty food bowl could be fueling a superbug crisis
  • Immune compromised, elderly and children at greatest risk
  • Food bowls are best made of dishwasher-safe materials such as stainless steel or glass and should be washed daily
  • The saying “Dogs’ mouths are cleaner than peoples’” is an old wives tale. They have bacteria as well.
  • Keep your cat’s litter box cleaned constantly so they don’t track contents to countertops or tables

Dr. Dana Hawkinson, medical director of Infection Prevention and Control, The University of Kansas Health System

  • With summer coming and more of us going to bars and restaurants, it’s important to consider the risk to you and those in your bubble
  • With COVID cases increasing and the virus circulating in our community, it’s also important to be current on vaccination and boosters
  • The elderly still make up most of the COVID deaths. Age is one of the biggest risk factors for severe outcomes
  • With cases declining in Britain, the hope is, as has been the trend, the same will follow in the United States

Jill Chadwick, news director, Medical News Network

  • Starting tomorrow and continuing until after Labor Day, Morning Medical Update will go on summer schedule
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays will feature encore presentations of our more interesting shows
  • Monday, Wednesday and Friday will still be live updates
  • If there is another COVID surge or any reason to be live, we will be here
  • Send story ideas to medicalnewsnetwork@kumc.edu

Wednesday June 1 at 8:00 a.m. is the next Show Me the Science program. Forget phasers and warp drive. Did you know that NASA has played a big role in a lot of medical advances here on earth? We’ll explore the science behind the research helping those with cancer, reproductive issues and even your DNA.
