Thursday Media Briefing on COVID-19 4-2-20

Doctors at The University of Kansas Health System told reporters the hospital is currently caring for 36 inpatients who are confirmed positive for COVID-19. 14 of those patients are on venitlators. 48 inpatients are awaiting test results. All are kept apart from other patients.
Doctors want to point out that COVID-19 doesn’t have superpowers. It doesn’t jump out and attack you. It still requires person-to-person contact to spread. The best way to stop its spread is literally with your own two hands. Click on the video below for the full news briefing.
• Chris Wilson, vice president of System Integration and Innovation at The University of Kansas Health System told reporters what is happening in smaller communities. He says the health system is working hand in hand with medical providers in those areas to provide the same level of care and expertise across the state.
• Dana Hawkinson, MD, Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Control, compared COVID-19 to the movie “The Terminator.” By that he means both are relentless, and continues to remind us that proper hand hygiene and keeping your hands away from your face is the single most effective way to stop the spread of the disease.
• Steve Stites, MD, Chief Medical Officer at the health system explains how the lungs work, and why a cough is what really puts someone nearby at risk.
Friday, April 3, at 8:00 a.m. is the next daily briefing call with media. You’ll want to tune in for a special announcement from the KU School of Medicine on an innovative way they’re helping in the battle against COVID-19.
