Many children with autism tend to wander or ‘elope’. Matt Reese, Ph.D, former director of the Center for Child Health and Development and co-director of the Kansas Center of Autism Research and Training at The University of Kansas Hospital says he identifies with families of children who wander.
“Elopement is so common among autistic children that it has, within the last year, become a diagnostic label for insurance companies to pay for intervention.”
Dr. Reese has a grant to develop a tracking system with an area company to help parents cope and locate their autistic children who disappear often unaware of dangers such as water.
