What to Expect in Your Child's Back-to-School Physical

As children go back to school, many parents bring them to the pediatrician for their annual physical exam. There’s a lot more involved that just opening wide and saying “Ahhhhhh,” including two new vaccinations required in Kansas…one for meningitis and one for Hepatitis B.

Dr. Steve Lauer, a pediatrician at The University of Kansas Health System, offers advice for parents and explains what doctors look for in back to school physicals. He also explains why concussion testing is becoming more common in sports physicals and how to be best prepared for them, why vaccinations are so important, what he says to parents who are unsure about vaccinations and the special needs of adolescents. He also stresses the need for children of every age to get a flu shot.
