What Your Scale Isn't Telling You

If you’re focusing on fitness, you probably step on the scale a lot. But what does your weight really represent? When you get that number, you can’t see how much muscle or fat you have. All you see is how much you weigh. But now there’s new technology available at The Sports Medicine and Performance Center at The University of Kansas Health System that gives you a total picture of your body composition. It’s called the InBody test, a non-invasive body composition analysis that provides a detailed breakdown of your weight in terms of muscle, fat, and water. It gives you an accurate look at body fat, lean muscle mass, basal metabolic weight, water retention and muscle mass in your arms, legs and trunk.

In the video, Randy Evans, a dietitian with the Sports Medicine and Performance Center, says it is easy to get discouraged by numbers from the scale, but your weight doesn’t tell the whole story. He explains that your body is made up of muscle, fat and water. So losing weight is not the same as losing fat. Likewise, gaining weight may not be all fat gain. He adds the InBody provides an extensive display of information on body composition that can be used to efficiently lose fat, dial in your nutrition, identify muscle deficiencies and more. He says once you know your biometrics, you are able to formulate a plan based on what you need to help you achieve the results you are looking for.

The video also shows Randy Evans demonstrating how the InBody test works.
