Thanks to extraordinary efforts of staff to take care of patients during today's storm, the hospital performed 151 surgeries and procedures today system wide. The operations varied from heart and cancer to orthopedic.
The University of Kansas Cancer Center treated more than 200 patients at the main facility in Westwood and through community cancer centers across the metro. Treatments included chemotherapy and radiation oncology.
There were 510 patients in the hospital today. Hospital staff arranged for transportation for 160 key personnel to serve those patients. A transportation center was created, dispatching 4-wheel drive vehicles to bring staff to work. Plus, cots were still available for staff who would stay the night at the hospital.
The hospital also remained in service as the area's only nationally verified Level I Trauma Center with its heated landing pads on top of the hospital. The hospital treated six patients because of falls in the slippery conditions and patients from three motor vehicle accidents.
Clinics will reopen on Wednesday, February 5th, although some will be delayed. The University of Kansas Physician Clinics will open at 10:00 am. All other clinics will open for regular hours. However, the heart clinic in St. Joseph will be closed, as will the surgical center at KU MedWest in Shawnee.
