Hydration Matters, Say the Royals Team Doctors

The recent cramping problems with Royals’ starter Yordano Ventura reinforce the message to players about hydration, say Royals’ team doctors.

Royals team physician, Dr. Vincent Key, says he and Royals trainer Nick Kenny stress to players that hydration is more than just drinking water during the game.

Dr. Key says working on hydration needs to be an everyday commitment in order to get an athlete’s body ready to respond.

Dr. Key says drinking water is essential to hydration, but when athletes are losing excessive water because of high heat or exertion, he recommends supplementing the water with electrolytes.

Water also plays an important role in recovery, according to Dr. Key.  Athletes should keep hydrating after a game to make sure they will recover faster, minimize any stiffness and be ready for the next game.

The defending American League Champion Kansas City Royals begins its fifth year with The University of Kansas Hospital as its Official Healthcare Provider.

Once again, doctors from the hospital’s Sports Medicine and Performance Center will be taking care of the players while other hospital caregivers take care of the fans at The K.
